Reached my goal weight and still running!

I have been a little lazy about my updates lately and figured I’d better get busy and do one.  It’s mid summer here in south west Michigan and it’s been averaging about 68 degrees for a high this week.  Not normal but as a runner quite enjoyable I must admit!

Since reaching my goal weight, I have switched my diet into a maintenance mode now and increased my daily calorie intake to around 2000.  This so far seems to be a good level for me as long as I have continued my exercise routine which still primarily consists of a daily run of anywhere from 3 miles on the low side to about 7 miles on the high side which I usually do on one of the “weekend days”.

At this point I am only working on increasing my speed with my running.  I ran a second 10K in late June and beat my first race time in May of 56:45 with new personal best of 54:04 on what I felt was a tougher course than my first race.  I want at this point to increase my speed and endurance and eventually be able to get to the 50 second 10K level for next spring at the Fifth Third River Bank Run, so maybe next time I can keep up with my son for a good portion of it.

In the meantime I am just enjoying my new found health and I find myself much more willing to do the chores outside around the house, simply because they don’t seem like as much “work” as they once did.  I still haven’t had the desire to redo the water garden, but maybe that will become next years project.  The chickens are doing well and we are about 4 weeks from “first eggs” we think now.  Can’t wait.

I have continued to maintain my daily diary on my weight loss and calorie intake .  I feel this is imperative to keep tabs on yourself.  I still fight myself on the old eating habits.  It’s real easy if I’m not careful, to grab an extra handful of chips or extra scoop of ice cream simply because I can now and the diary reminds that for every indulgence, there is a “penalty” to pay by giving up something else to remain at my proper daily intake of calories.  Without the diary, I would have nothing to remind me of that.

For all of you just starting on the road to weight loss and exercise, please go back through this entire section of “one pound weight loss” in my blog here and I believe you will find things to help give you hope and maybe some inpiration on your journey.  There is nothing in there about miracle diets or magical pills but simply hard work through exercise and smart eating habits.  I lost 100 lbs. on my journey and so can you!  It doesn’t matter if you need to lose 20 lbs. or 200 lbs., the method is the same and it does work but it’s not easy and will require you commit to it.

I am still not having to take any of the diabetes, cholesterol, or blood pressure medications that were required when I was obese and extremely unhealthy.  You can do the same for yourself.  I now save over $1000 per year on prescriptions by staying healthy and eating smart.  That helps pay for the $100 running shoes I prefer and still leaves some for other “toys” I may desire.

You can do it too!  The obese, over weight, unhealthy you is just “one pound ago” so don’t wait and get started on your journey today!

  1. That’s great that you don’t have to take any more meds! Great job on the weight loss

  2. After I originally commented I seem to have clicked the -Notify me when new comments are added- checkbox and from now on every time a comment is added I get four emails with the exact same comment. Is there an easy method you can remove me from that service? Appreciate it!

  3. I’ll have to look into that as I’m not sure how to fix it but I’ll see what I can do.
